Siri not coming to older devices

Are you Siri-ous? We had to throw in an awful pun. Sorry.

Apple has released its official word that Siri will not be making it to older iOS devices.

Michael Steeber, contributor to Cult of Mac and independent blogger, was contacted by a developer who had submitted a bug report to Apple.

The bug report suggested an optional build of iOS for older devices that includes Siri, available through a paid upgrade.

Apple then responded with a, albeit rather blunt, no.

Cnet UK originally reported that Apple was testing Siri on the iPhone 4, but it looks like this will never come to pass. Many expected as much – the voice assistant is one of the few features that sets this phone apart from its older sibling, the iPhone 4.

9to5Mac reported that developer Steven Troughton-smith had successfully ported Siri (most of its features, anyway) onto the iPhone 4. The site also provides a high-quality video showing a side-to-side comparison of both the iPhone 4 and 4S running Siri.

In an exclusive interview, Steven said, “it seems to be 100% functional. I’m working on the rough edges, but everything that works on the iPhone 4S seems to work here.

“I have no doubts that others will package this up and distribute it quasi-illegally, or try and sell it to people. I am only interested in the technology and making it work; proving that it works and works well on the iPhone 4 and other devices.”

So it looks like, without illegally transferring the files onto an iPhone 4, our older devices won’t be grace with Siri. Apple has also released a statement in relation to the poor battery life of its new handset -- looks like the iPhone 4S hasn't had all of its creases ironed out just yet.
